Introduction to Soul Care
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23 NRSV
Workshop Overview
Become Present to the Struggle and Delight of Caring for Your Soul
In this course, you will learn to pay attention to the aliveness of your own soul. You will recognize the enemies of your soul and will be present to the struggle and delight of caring for your soul.
In the midst of so much uncertainty and unrest, we all need an anchor. In the words of William Stafford (“The Way It Is”):
There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

Our soul is like an inner stream of water, which gives strength, direction, and harmony to every other element of our life. When that stream is as it should be, we are constantly refreshed and exuberant in all we do, because our soul itself is then profusely rooted in the vastness of God and his Kingdom, including nature; and all else within us is enlivened and directed by that stream.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
